Female erotica, wine and vegan cookies: no, not a perfect first date, although it would be good a place to take one. It’s that time of the month again: second Saturday, when female and trans literary talents – both well-established and up-and-coming - congregate at Femina Potens for the Award-Winning literary erotic event, Sizzle.

“We like co-presenting those [because] two people can learn a lot by sharing the stage with a hero and then having the same attention and soapbox for emerging artists still developing their own voice,” says host Madison Young, who is currently working on her memoir, The Tale of a Bondage Model, due out this spring.

This month’s event will feature the founder of Liquid Fire Productions, Vixen Noir (aka Veronica C. Combs); Rhiannon Argo of the new generation of Sister Spit; and Cristy C. Road, an illustrator an independent publisher. (Past participants include icons Inga Muscio, Annie Sprinkle and Michelle Tea,) Doors open at 7:30pm, followed by an open mic and a Q&A session (all who sign up by the start of the performances will get a chance onstage).

And all will take place at the new location of Femina Potens, the art gallery that outgrew its home in the Mission and has settled in to its new digs, the former home of Image Leather, at Market and Sanchez.

“Our mission statement is to increase visibility of women and trans artists,” says Young, who also is the gallery’s cofounder. “The new space is right in the heart of the Castro with tons of visibility.”

The gallery, whose name means “female power” in Latin, is a forum for all kinds of art, from literary events like Sizzle to visual arts, film screenings, and multimedia presentations like the global warming-themed installation inside the gallery’s large windows. (The piece is part of the only queer public arts program in San Francisco.)
