star.gif Partying Indiefest style

By Vanessa K. Carr

Yes, the SF IndieFest is about great independent film, but let's be real: it's also about theme parties and free booze.

The opening party last night at Cellspace did not disappoint. What better way to follow two hours in a dark theater than with a rowdy mechanical bull, enough free beer and lychee martinis to loosen the hips and morals of everyone in the place, a live alt-bluegrass band in the back, and Dolly and Burt presiding over the whole affair as Best Little Whorehouse in Texas rolled on the big screen?

It's no wonder SF IndieFest knows how to throw a damn good party; founder/director Jeff Ross's background is in club promotion -- not filmmaking. Ross says his favorite pick for this year's festival is Pop Skull, "an experimental horror/drug fest," which screens Saturday (2/9) and Wednesday (2/13) nights at the Roxie Theater.

The SF IndieFest has a string of fun parties coming up over the next week: there's Roller Disco this Saturday (2/9) at Cellspace; the return of the Big Lebowski Party next Saturday (2/16) at Space Gallery with mini-bowling, white Russians, and Lebowski-inspired outfits, and a closing party Sunday (2/17) at 12 Galaxies with live sets by The Bar Feeders, RubberSideDown, and The Midnight Bombers.
