star.gif Obama throwback T tosses me back to my high school years

hoodiespunahoutee.bmp

OK, true confessions: I attended Punahou school in Honolulu, Hawaii - and I hated it. But seriously, Barack Obama is doing more than blowing my mind with his performance as a candidate - I'm also having to rethink my dreaded junior high and high school years at this elite prep institution that essentially catered to the islands' missionary/colonist spawn and the wealthy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Obama - and even I - also went there, and our families certainly weren't soaking in it. (And boy, was I reminded of that all the time by my parents.) Still, can that miserable time actually be considered remotely...cool? Truly, this Neighborhoodies' ringer T-shirt - oozing nostalgia for a Punahou I'm still ambivalent about - is weirdest fashion item I've ever lusted after.

Wow. The perfect way to demonstrate both your liberal elitism and your local elitism! Get your ass kicked in Waipahu and at a gun show!

The only reason I can think of not to vote for Obama is simply that Punahou grads will become completely intolerable. It will finally make Hawaii totally unlivable. I think it's a pretty strong reason. I also think this t-shirt proves my theory correct.

Kimberly Chun:

Ha! Believe it or not I DON'T get my ass kicked in Waipahu - maybe it has something to do with native Hawaiians being in my family, I dunno! - nor do I at gun shows - though I also hate guns!

Believe it or not, Punahou grads are already intolerable! All you have to do is read their alumni news-magazine. I think Obama's conflicted feelings about Punahou are pretty clear, however - and how could he not have mixed feelings about it? Everyone I knew who was strong-armed by their parents to attend feels the same way.

daknabbit:

Pretty kickin' tee! I know three (3) punahou grads and they're all pretty goddamned nice! A very tolerable bunch overall. BTW, theories cannot be proved correct, they can only be falsified. (And I just did it!)

Ok, Dak. I accept your correction concerning my misuse of scientific principals. However, there are two problems with your claim for falsifying my theory.

1 - MY theory is that IF Obama wins THEN Punahou people will become COMPLETELY intolerable. Because Obama has not yet been elected President of the United States (that's what I mean by "wins"), my theory has not been falsified. I claim only now that an Obama/Punahou t-shirt only tends to demonstrate a trend toward a higher level of insufferability. A correlation, if you will, between Obama's continued success in the primary election and a swelling of Punahou heads.

2 - You know three (3) P-Hos. I went to school for three (3) years with thirty-three (33) P-Hos. Just in my class, not the whole school. Your sample is not adequate for the purpose of deriving conclusive results vis-à-vis my theory.

daknabbit:

Well, gosh. 33? That's a big sample. Ok, you have more data! For now that is.... Let's see what happens after Obama wins. If my three P-heads become intolerable then I will concede that your theory has not been falsified. However, since you speak of correlations, trends, and what not, it will be unclear what conclusion can be drawn if say, one of them becomes intolerable, or perhaps two become less tolerable than previously, etc. On statistical grounds you could perhaps claim victory no matter what happens. In which case your theory is not falsifiable and hence unscientific. Which you never claimed it to be in the first place.

In any case, you have to admit that is a pretty nice shirt.

I have to admit nothing.
