I've been sitting on this tip/rumor for a week and I'm increasingly led to believe it's true -- plus, I mentioned it last night on the City Desk NewsHour television show -- so I'm just going to throw it out there: we hear that the Mayor's Office is considering a plan to replace Sup. Ed Jew with Assessor Phil Ting, then move Sup. Gerardo Sandoval into the Assessor's post and appoint an ally into Sandoval's Dist. 11 seat. The move -- reminiscent of his triple play that put Sean Elsbernd on the board -- would break away a semi-regular progressive vote and give the mayor an additional vote on the board.
I've contacted all the principals and only heard back so far from a representative for Ting, who told me, "He has not been talking to the mayor about this." But his name continues to be dropped in the Chronicle and elsewhere as a possible Jew replacement. Sandoval hasn't returned my calls or e-mails, which seems fishy, and he ran for the job last time so it's clear that he wants it.
I'll add comments to this post as I hear back from the mayor's office or otherwise get more information. And if you have any additional info or speculation who Newsom would appoint to the D11 seat, please post as well.

My question to Newsom flak Nathan Ballard: "Has anyone from the Mayor's Office talked to Phil Ting about the possibility of appointing him to replace Ed Jew and has anyone talked to Gerardo Sandoval about the possibility of naming him Assessor?"
His reply: "No comment"
Interesting...

OK, I just heard from Sandoval, who said my call was the first he heard of this idea. "I haven't talked to anyone and there's been no discussions." He wouldn't say whether he'd be open to the offer, but said he's flattered if true. Even if both Sandoval and Ting haven't been contacted, it's still possible that the mayor's people are talking about this. But I do still think this belongs in the unsubstantiated rumor category for now.

Good stuff on the Ed Jew situation. We had a council member in Santa Clara, Tim Jefferies, who had the same issues.
By the way, my blog, the Mission City Lantern, covers Santa Clara politics, especially the Niners issue.

Have you seen, four days after turning himself in to his local police department, the mug shots taken of Ed Jew?

Interesting but one basic question is why would Ting rather be a supervisor than an assessor when Sandoval would rather be the reverse?

I don't think that Sandoval would -- or should -- accept an appointment. When he announced he was running for Assessor back in 2005, he explicitly did so before Newsom picked Mabel Teng's replacement -- and said that he would rather run in November than be appointed by Newsom.
I hope Sandoval sticks to his guns this time too.

The Newsom hacks like to float ideas to see how the people will react. Sandoval better learn some lesson from Tony Hall. I am sure that Sandoval knows that Newsom wanted to recall him after the election and tried to convince people in D11, except there were no takers -- Newsom wanting to recall Sandoval after Newsom helped Sandoval get elected based on a deal the two of them made -- what a snake!
That would be so funny. Newsom appoints Sandoval, gives the seat to one of his boys and stab Sandoval in the back. Newsom's people have a war chest of dirt on Sandoval. They will drag him through the mud worse than what they are doing to Ed Jew to remove him from the Assessor's position in a minute.

Sandoval ran for Assessor a couple of years ago. He gets termed out of office in 2008 and presumably needs another job. For Ting, being a supervisor is a higher profile job than Assessor.

You should delete the comment above from James Rowen.
Apparently, he used to be quite involved in politics, but his blog is nothing but lies, slander, and material that violates copyright laws.

James Rowin....
The www.missioncitylantern.blogspot.com is run by an angry little man just filled with hate. Especially towards women. He likes
to assault them and if you search the site you will find the link to his nasty little secret. So for you Mr. Rowin to talk about ethics
and values..... well it's just assanine. Rowin, give it up!

I didn't see that post by KM above before my first post.
I completely agree. Rowin is void of character. He is a copy and paste expert. He is a spin doctor in the 1st degree. He fell
from grace...make that a bar stool many years ago. He is a two face back stabbing liar. Karma is coming for you little man.
The scary thing is this little man is trying to get on a city commission. I say expose this little prick.

I believe that all charges should be dropped against Supervisor Ed Jew,as he is no worst than any of the Supervisors including the Mayor and District Attorney, who have led dishonest lives in their positions in the political world,at least Ed Jew has some values which few of our city leaders have.
