Sup. Chris Daly may have crossed a line by suggesting during a budget hearing that Mayor Gavin Newsom uses cocaine, but the mayor isn't entitled to his overblown righteous indignation. Why? Because he's the one who left open this question earlier this year when he responded to revelations of his sexual improprieties and alcohol abuse with the blanket dismissal "that everything you’ve heard and read is true and I’m deeply sorry about that." Then he refused to answer any questions on either issue, with only a couple exceptions weeks later involving friendly journalists (including CBS's Hank Plante, who asked about cocaine and Newsom didn't directly answer, something Daly rightly called an "artful dodge"). Newsom is now simply reaping what he has sown. He has proven himself to be untrustworthy and willing to say or do anything to get out of a jam -- or to simply avoid answering questions not to his liking -- so it's hard to put too much stock in statements like, "I am associated with something that I don't do, never have, not even in the realm of reason should someone even accuse me of this."
Let's be clear about this drug and this mayor: they do operate in the same realm. I'm not saying that I have direct knowledge of him doing lines, but I know of some people who have made that claim and it wouldn't surprise me if we hear more about this accusation before November. And I know there are people in the mayor's office who are no strangers to blow. Is that scandalous? Not really, not in this town, particularly among the Marina and restaurant owner crowds that Newsom has long associated with. Newsom's Boy Scout schtick wore thin a long time ago.
But why is this a news story? Generally, I think drug use by a politician is only an issue for politicians who promote the war of drugs, which doesn't really apply to Newsom. Hypocrisy is more important than recreational drug use. But there are two reasons why Newsom and drugs might continue to be a news story. One is the very point that Daly made, which is that Newsom's budget cuts the kinds of substance abuse programs that he is availing himself of, but it cuts them for the poor people who can't tap the same services and connections that Newsom used. That's a problem, particularly for a mayor that rode to power on the promise of getting homeless people the support services they need to lift themselves out of poverty, specifically citing drug addiction as a major factor time and again. And the other problem for Newsom now could be his categorical denial of ever using cocaine. If that turns out to be a lie, it'll be one more reason for us not to believe what our mayor says. And that's the real story.

CHRIS DALY GOT PUNKED by Gavin Newsom, plain and simple. All Newsom had to do was stand on the steps of city hall and blame everything on Chris Daly and suddenly Daly found himself removed from the most powerful position he'll ever have in this town - by his ideological ally Aaron Peskin, no less. As always, Daly imploded with yet another of his adolescent tantrums. Yet, rather than concede to the obvious facts of the situation, Daly's supporters are instead resorting to impressive logical contortions to defend him. With that type of unquestioning support, why should Daly ever bother to act like an adult?

I've heard from two independent sources that there are lists of people who have copped to snorting blow with the Gavster.
"I never had sexual relations with that woman, miss Lewinsky."

But government studies also suggest that 80 percent of addicts will relapse after treatment. And experts in the field seem to agree that the success rate for rehab programs, most of which are based on the 12-step therapy created by Alcoholics Anonymous, hovers somewhere between 30 percent at best, and below 10 percent at worst.
“The therapeutic community claims a 30 percent success rate, but they only count people who complete the program,” said Joseph A. Califano Jr., who founded the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. “Seventy to eighty percent drop out in three to six months.” (snip)

I am glad Daly did what he did. Newsom is a total hypocrite. The Emergency Shelters should keep their funding. It is important for the homeless to be able to go somewhere, take a shower, get medicine, get referrals, etc.
Newsom shoul also not cut funding for mental health services.
Lastly its pretentious for Newsom to pretend he has not been accused of cocaine use. After all, the lawyer for the Police Officers on videogate has been trying to depose Newsom regarding his cocaine use. Herrera has been fighting the deposition.
Good job Daly!

If the Mayor is reelected in a landslide in Nov (as he is expected to), you can thank in part to Chris Daly. Voters are so fed up with the Supervisor's juvenile antics and obnoxious behavior, that a vote for Gavin Newsom is a vote AGAINST Chris Daly.

Honestly, I don't care if Newsom does coke, since it's rampant in this city anyway, just as it is in New York. What I do care about is the blood sport that politics has become in this city, where ad hominem attacks are SOP. I didn't like it when people made personal attacks on Daly during the latest election, and I don't like seeing Daly use those tactics himself. This tactic won't get Daly anywhere, he doesn't seem to understand that "politics" requires actually working with people to reach agreements, rather than creating polarizing situations that only work against him. It's great that he's an advocate for the poor and the downtrodden, but he is a really lousy politician.

Daly is so rude - he's a major hyprocrit to try to be Mr. Equality, when he treats only a very slim portion of his ditrict like royalty and wants everyone to cater to them. His constant attacks on Newsom are tired attemps to knock him down and make him look weak. Collaborating with other people is part of being a grownup; his offensive politics only reinforce SF's social stratification. Argh!

SFBG constant backing of Supe Daly is one of the main reasons why he thinks he can get away eith his behavior. He sucks and this newspaper just can't admit that to themselves. Get over him! He is not this saint you podtray him to be stop taking his side ALL the time. It is really getting in the way of your "credible" journalism!
Posted by daly annoyance | June 23, 2007 06:01 PM
Why is the SFBG so full of Daly apologists?? From the moment this story I could practically count down the minutes until the inevitable SBFG editorials appeared screaming 'Yes Daly messed up, but NEWSOM BROUGHT IT ON HIMSELF, IT'S HIS FAULT ANYWAY!!"
Admit it SFBG, your uncouth hero finally crossed over to where even you cant pull his ass out of the fire.

Doesn't everyone see how stupid it was for Daly to bring up the cocaine, and, doubly stupid for him to refuse to apologize?
If it wasn't stupid for him to bring allegations WITH ZERO EVIDENCE, then I hope he'll embrace the rumors that people will be spreading to explain Daly's erratice behavior.
Stupid, Daly, stupid.

Chris Daly is loose cannon as well as an egomaniac that is dragging the Progressive party down. Even the allies he had on the Board of Supes have turned against him. SFBG: Have you ever considered that by constantly enabling/defending this guy, it is only going to backfire at the polls? SF voters are too smart to buy into Daly's smear tatics. And if the vote for Mayor was held today, I am willing to bet that Newsom would win with a huge victory.

Daly may be all these things, but he isn't just these things anymore than Newsom is simply his worst attributes. Daly has been the most effective progressive supervisor on the board in recent years, based on the sheer amount of difficult and important legislation he's moved. We're not giving him a pass on bad behavior, but it's important to keep it in perspective, particularly with the Chron going so overboard to whack Daly. If Newsom were initiating programs we agreed with, we'd focus less on questions of his character, trustworthiness, and resistance to accountability.

"If Newsom were initiating programs we agreed with, we'd focus less on questions of his character, trustworthiness, and resistance to accountability."
Thanks for making the point Steven. You're giving Daly a free pass to be a raging lunatic that needs immediate psychiatric help since you agree with his programs. Good thing he's not Hitler.
:(
Can someone start a new party in this town for all of us Moderates?

" If Newsom were initiating programs we agreed with, we'd focus less on questions of his character, trustworthiness, and resistance to accountability."
That is exactly the type of thing the republicans kept saying about Bill Clinton. It would appear that all extremists, regardless of where they stand on the political spectrum, are the same type of creatures. They employ the same cynical arguments and are motivated by the same tribal hostilities.
And they always presume a moral superiority, which they think absolves them from any responsibility for their actions. In that regard, Chris Daly's actions aren't aberrant. Rather, they perfectly illustrate all that's wrong with progressives in this town.

Hopefully y'all are getting paid overtime by the Newsom campaign. Say hey to Byorn for me, will ya? Thanks.

Steven T. Jones- How much does Chris Daly pay YOU. You are such a petty asshole, too blinded by having your head up Daly's butt to have any real integrity

Gavin is no Clinton. Clinton is smart. Gavmeister's brain was fried with booze and coke a long time ago. Clinton has compassion for the common man. Gavmeister is a narcissist. Clinton surrounded himself with intelligent, strong people like Hillary. Gavmeister surrounds himself with yes people who allowed themselves get cuckolded -- Tourk was having his wife screwed under his nose because he was busy screwing other people for personal gain and power. Clinton is interesting. Newsom has nothing good to say -- in private, he is a nasty bitch. Clinton accomplished a lot in office. Gavmeister is busy stealing other peoples ideas, put out press releases claiming credit for the ideas, and then not doing any follow through. Clinton is a self made man. Gavmeister is a useless fratboy who grew up as a perpetual benefactor of a very rich family. Clinton is real. Gavmeister is a total farce. Clinton is a real man. Gavmeister is bisexual at best.
