""Democracy requires the presence of level playing fields in order to work.
In the end, the size of the Getty fortune is not compatible with democracy." -- Gray Brechin, 'Imperial San Francisco'

Gavin Newsom, local actor, "acting locally", trained in Hollywood-style political ethics.

The mayor actually provided a lot of quality answer and came with his facts. That's admirable. It's suggests that he's actually working. Managing scarce resources is never really easy. The thing that disappoints me was the Guardian was doing a Fox News style hit piece here. They didn't care about hearing the facts and trying to do decent journalism. Instead, this is purely advocacy journalism just like Fox News. I heard Bill Clinton speak a few months ago and he pointed out that the US has gotten out of the business of solving problems and we're now just drawing battle lines and lobbing grenades at each other. I think the mayor did a good job showing he knew the issues dug deep on the data and presented the facts. HE SCHOOLED these so called reporters. I used to live in Dallas (unfortunately) and was dismayed at the knee jerk right wing sympathies. But it's no better on the left...it doesn't solve anything. 64% below market housing...listen to your self!!!!!!! Where is the money for that going to come from???? The very notion of more than half the housing being below market will create an after market for housing. This has to be some of the most brain dead thinking I've ever heard of. How do you make it work. The plan presented in the Guardian has absolutely no empirical example of success...in fact, it has countless examples of failing. The complaint about Silicon Valley is a bit silly. There are plenty of people that live outside the city that commute in. To claim they are not REAL citizens of the city is just shameful. THEY LIVE HERE. Growth in the peninsula which is reviled in the city is what is essentially funding social services in teh city...instead of claiming...just send a thank you card to the mayor of san jose. This is another form of bigotry plain and simple. By the definition of it!

I'm interested in Muni. I don't think Newsom actually uses Muni. I no longer use Muni because it's not only unreliable, it's extremely uncomfortable and over-crowded, plus the employees have a terrible attitude. The system is basically punitive for the citizens. Punitive in terms of parking, punitive as far as the system, and punitve dealing with the Muni employees, including the fare inspectors, who harrass and abuse people. Forget Muni. It's a mess, and no one has done anything about it.
