Cindy Sheehan, who turned the loss of her son Casey in Iraq into a major national antiwar campaign, became a lighting rod for right-wing attacks, then stepped down from her leadership role, exhausted and somewhat bitter, is back on the scene -- and running for Congress in San Francisco.
She came by the Guardian office this week and talked at length about her new political challenge. She realizes it's not going to be easy taking on Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, the head of the local Democratic Party power structure and a champion fundraiser with essentially unlimited access to cash. But while Pelosi has been building up her power base in Washington, she's often forgotten her base back home -- and I hope Sheehan can push her not only on the war but on the Presidio privatization and its impacts nationwide.

Bush and Cheney are a disaster for the U.S.A.
Pelosi is obstructing JUSTICE!
Just remember on the Bush/Cheney watch,
the worlds greatest military power FAILED to defend even its own HQ! Whats up with that?
Bust Bush & Cheney!

too bad that her once effective protest has become a carnival for outsiders to come in to San Francisco and impose a candidate on us to tell us who can and cannot be the progressive candidate to oppose Nancy Pelosi.
We have people here who have worked hard to get a progressive to run against Nancy, and now we have an outsider coming in to demand and command money, volunteers and more from us when we have so many people here who could have done the job.
and we have other priorities locally that are important that Cindy has already said do not matter since it's all about her. Now it all goes to an outsider who will pick up her toys and take her roadshow to another city once she's done having her fun being the Terry Schiavo of the left.

I agree, there's an element of the outsider coming into town here. But on the other hand, it's been hard to find a local progressive with any real visibility and fund-raising ability who is willing to take on Pelosi. So at least there will be some chance of holding her accountable.

There's no way I'd vote against Nancy Pelosi. I'm quite proud of her, despite her many compromises. And when I think of the wretched leadership that she has replaced, I couldn't be happier. Cindy Sheehan needs to channel her grief into more productive pursuits, not the misguided grandstanding that she's lapsed into. She has my unqualified sympathy at the senseless loss of her only son. But that still won't get her my vote.

The fact that the Guardian is trumpeting this doomed candidacy speaks volumes about the moral bankruptcy of the "progressive" movement in San Francisco. We have a representative in Pelosi who supports gay marriage, has opposed the war in Iraq from day one, supports expanded access to health care and is the highest ranking woman in the US government. But we're now being urged to dump her for this shrieking harridan? A woman who keeps company with the raving anti-semites of the ANSWER coalition and who spends time with the Stalinists of the Revolutionary Communist Party?
I thought nothing could shock me anymore on the pages of the Guardian. I didn't expect you to endorse Pelosi but to give publicity to this carpetbagger is extraordinary - even for you.

Thank you Bay Guardian for talking to Cindy. It is shocking to me how much of the media, including some in the alternative media, have run away from her.
I am fascinated by this "carpetbagger spin" which seems to be the buzz around town just now.
What could make us prouder than to have America's best-known antiwar activist, Cindy Sheehan, return to her home in the Bay Area and take on the tyrants in Washington on our behalf? Who could be better? If not Cindy-- who else?
She is one of us!
When Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House we were promised greater prestige and influence in Washington-- but look what she gave us: shame and embarrassment. She wouldn't put impeachment on the table, and why? We have learned since that she has known that the U.S. planned to use torture!
Is Nancy Pelosi more a "San Franciscan" than Cindy? Depends on how you define San Franciscan, doesn't it?
Whatever party we may have been loyal to-- that loyalty was futile if it supported deaf politicians who promulgated destructive policies.
It is clear to me that Cindy, whether she expressed it succinctly or not, is an independent because she will represent ALL San Franciscans who are overwhelmingly against illegal war, occupation, and torture, and who are overwhelmingly for peace, health, and social justice.
I can't imagine Cindy being labelled-- she is simply-- and best just Cindy!
We San Franciscans should claim her as our own, and we should be grateful that Cindy claimed us!
And when we elect her, we will know that San Francisco Values-- the values of tolerance and honesty (and not the caricatured values beloved by Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly)-- will win!
We will have someone who will truly listen to us and truly represent us. We will all, whatever party we belong to, be the better for it!
Go! Cindy! Go!

Robert Rocks! In San Francisco, Pelosi has disappointed many. She is complicit in the torture scandal. Regardless of your personal view of torture, it IS illegal (recently, to my dismay, I have discovered that a few San Franciscans have watched one too many version of 'Die Hard' and think that torture is an okay thing to perpetrate on 'bad' people).
Furthermore, most of you who write that you support Pelosi and cite that she is against the war are uniformed. Pelosi has a great deal of power as Speaker of the House. Third in line for the presidency, she can reject war funding bills that do not provide for withdrawal. She can reject them daily. She chooses to do nothing, removed impeachment from the table, and also refuses to meet with San Francisco voters.
Pelosi hasn't met with her voters in two years.
She refuses to meet with any peace groups, the Quakers, the Buddhists, Veterans for Peace, etc. Twenty-five groups signed a letter last august requesting a meeting and she refused, instead attending a coffee and donuts meeting with potential campaign donors.
I voted for Pelosi, to my chagrin. She lies to us continually about her abilities, and the fact that most of us didn't pay attention to civics in high school helps her cover up her true loyalty to corporate interest and to party politics which are also hostage to corporate interest.
She has also betrayed the Philipino community, and refuses to meet with them. She helped craft HR730, a bill that provides pensions to WWII philipino veterans, then dropped them and the bill after winning speaker of the house, telling them that 'things were different now'.
She pretends to be left when the truth is, with the exception of a few things like gay rights, she is interchangeable with any right wing republican. The media helps her cover this up by continully referring to her as 'left'. If you tell a lie often enough the people will eventually believe it.
Nancy Pelosi has aided and abetted a criminal regime on a reign of terror, aiding it as it stripped US citizens of our rights, with the FISA bill, the disgusting patriot act and now HR1955, a bill that should have every american quaking in terror as it criminalizes our very thoughts. Yet we have been taught to consume and consume, and distract ourselves from these scary losses, like cows feeding at a trough without a worry in the world that the butcher truck has just pulled up.
If you are uninformed or in denial enough to defend Pelosi, there is little hope for you.
If you aren't, and you read this, throw your lot in with the rest of us that have finally woken up from our stupor, and give Cindy Sheehan, who is TRULY on your side, and who is for the rights of gays, and immigrants, and homeless, and elderly, and civil rights, and anything else that is pro-peace and pro-people, give her your vote, your heart, your money, and your time.

Please go to www.pelosiwatch.us to check out Nancy Pelosi's record on war votes (under "Congressional Record). Unlike her Bay Area colleagues, Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee, and Pete Stark, Nancy Pelosi voted for every single war appropriations bill until the one this past spring. She is not a member of the Out of Iraq caucus, nor did she sign on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 676, to create a system of national health care. She first used the excuse that she was Minority Leader as a reason for her failure to join caucuses, but as Speaker, she has not always exercised her perogative as not to vote. In other words, she frequently votes in the House of Representatives even though, as Speaker, she does not have to.

GOD Pelosi is an embarrassment! She is so much so that my family of 39 soon-to be former Democrats are going to vote for Cindy Sheehan; we consider her a perfect example of one brave voice exercising her rights against the war/insurance/drug MACHINE that Nancy Pelosi works for! If Cindy Sheehan does not run, we're going to write her in.
We REFUSE TO CONTINUE VOTING FOR DEMO'CONS WHO LIED TO US IN 2006! WE WERE PROMISED AN END TO THE WAR-Viet Nam ended when congress refused to feed the machine!! ALSO--WHERE IS PELOSI WITH REGARD TO HR-676-HEALTHCARE FOR ALL?
SHE'S NOT ONLY AN EMBARRASSMENT TO CALIFORNIA, SHE'S AN EMBARRASSMENT TO AMERICA--WITH HER PRIVATE JET--PAID FOR ON THE BACKS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE WORKING AND TRYING TO SURVIVE!
I say kick her out--along with Reid, Obama, Clinton, Dodd, Boxer, Feinstein, Mike Thompson and all the other LIARS who conned us in '06!
DUMP NANCY PELOSI!
GO CINDY SHEEHAN!
