Is this really so surprising?
1. We're a culture where celebrity status trumps substance in most every area.
2. Our election system is massively broken (how many millions do the pres. candidates spend to get elected to an office that pays 400k a yr? What percentage of eligible voters cast a vote? (Sure, this cycle is the highest since Nixon, but in general this signals that half of our citizenry most likely simply feels that they aren't represented at all.) And who can trust the voting system itself these days?)
So, it's par for the course in my mind.
