speaker.gif Cops clash with protestors: video

Thanks to Bob Brigham, I have some video of the Market Street protests this afternoon.

The Chron describes the scene this way: " As officers encircled the group, they briefly pushed other protesters onto the sidewalk and confiscated at least one bicycle and a sign."

But the video suggests a lot less restraint on the part of the cops.

These jokers try to shut down an intersection for a vanity-protest, and it's the police who lack restraint?

Metroliner:

Amen Mattymatt. AMEN.

Did I see the cop just sock the guy right in front of the camera? That's a little more than just "pushing" the protesters.

The San Jose protest on San Fernando was much more restrained -- everybody stayed on the sidewalk and waved their signs, with many many people honking to express their support (I suppose). There were cops about, but no brute squad. I got into it a little with some dude driving a Ford SUV with dealer plates.

Folks: The war in Iraq is five years long. Nearly 4,000 US kids dead. Maybe 60,000 Iraqis dead. And people are worried about traffic being snagged at an intersection?

Five years ago we shut down the city, and made a huge point about the war. Reminding people that business as usual is not okay is a legit form of protest.

The cops didn't need to be this rough.

mattymatt: i'm yawning from street demos, too. i haven't wielded a placard in years, and growing bored with anti-war slogans is not a popular reaction in the building where i work, to say the least.

but your knee-jerk opposition to all things guardian is as predictable as ANSWER's one-liners at this point.

as much as i once appreciated your antagonistic entires, you've become little more than a caricature of yourself, the very same problem that unfortunately afflicts much of the anti-war movement, in my bullshit humble opinion.

what's amusing is that you haven't surfaced on the web all that much in recent months -- but when it comes time to assume the guardian is a mere intellectual and political monolith, you're first in line to post a nasty diatribe dismissing us all as brainless loons.

nice work. but above-the-fray bloggers do better at cutesy than they do unabashed contempt.
