speaker.gif March on the governor's house

I'm usually the one who talks about how we have to solve financial problems locally, since the state and the feds won't give us what we need. And I still believe that, and I support a parcel tax for the local schools and I support using the rainy day fund and if we were allowed to raise property taxes in San Francisco, I'd support that.

But right now, while teachers and parents and students are flooding school board meetings around the state denouncing cuts, the real problem is in Sacramento, where the governor doesn't seem to care.

So maybe all of those angry people should take a little trip to Los Angeles and march on Schwarzenegger's house. He's home most weekends, I'm told. I think he lives in Brentwood.

50,000 protesters in Brentwood? Maybe he'd have to listen.

Miguel:

Hike the sales tax up to 18%. It would solve all of the budgetary insolvency of the city and allow for a vast expansion of needed social services.

Except that a sales tax is highly regressive, and would balance the budget on the backs of the poor.

We need to reinstate the 11% income tax bracket (for those with incomes of, say, 250k or more), index the brackets for inflation, and repeal prop 13 for commercial properties.

Actually the best place to do that would be in Santa Monica. The Governor has business offices on Main Street in the same building as where his longtime restaurant (now closed) is located, Schatzi on Main at 3110 Main Street (just across the border from Venice Beach)

When the recall campaign was run this was ground zero for the campaign. And whenever he is in Los Angeles, his private security detail AND the CHP can be seen guarding the fortress.

For a free case of turtle wax, name the campaign consultant for Democrats who lives in the condo complex next door, in Venice.
