Chris Daly and Robert Haaland are reporting that Aaron Peskin has lined up the votes to become the next chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party.
It's been a long and contested fight, and Daly now says it's over, and that Scott Wiener, Peskin's opponnent, should essentially drop out.
But Wiener has no intention of backing down; in fact, he just told me by phone that he disagrees with Daly's claim.
"It's pure spin," he said. "I have more committed votes than Aaron does."
Peskin remains confident that he'll prevail at the July 23 meeting and that more than half of the 34 voting members are lined up behind him. As for Wiener's comment, he said: "On Wednesday night, one of us will be right and one of us will be wrong."
Of course, neither side is releasing a list of names, since there's still intense lobbying going on behind the scenes.
Should be a wild meeting.

Check out LeftinSF. We've actually released the names of David Campos and David Chiu, the two high-profile late-decider's. Scott has neither released any names nor refuted that Campos and Chiu have now committed to Peskin.
It's ironic how much spin is involved in accusing me of pure spin. This is a political technique called projection which is a favorite of the Newsom camp.

Daly first threatens the DCCC members if they vote against Peskin: "my personal mission to make sure that any members voting for Scott never receive the endorsement of the Guardian, Tenants Union, Sierra Club, and Milk Club in subsequent races"
Then he accuses Scott Wiener of raging a sleaze campaign:
"Scott Wiener’s sleaze machine has hit high gear"
His behavior although typical can not really be considered constructive, is it any wonder many in this city are turned off by politics when he does his best to disenfranchise sections of the local population.
P.S. Daly stop patronizing women, she is there to do a job and not to have remarks like this handed out whilst try to be taken as a serious employee of the city “…and you, know…she’s pregnant…and, you know, looking good with it.”

I'd hardly call authoring and passing the Paid Parental Leave Charter Amendment, giving all City employees up to 16 weeks of paid time off when having a baby, patronizing to women.
I do think that it was relevant that Gavin Newsom refused to come to Committee to answer questions on his own Charter Amendment and instead sent Ms. DeBerry to cover for him. And yes, I felt uncomfortable giving her a difficult time about it.
And yes, there's been hardball played on both sides of the DCCC Chair race. The difference is that my engagement was intended to be private among those that agreed to be on the CHANGE Slate. I didn't publish my blog about it until after they publicly accused me of making threats (implying that I was making physical threats, which I clearly was not). Meanwhile Scott's team (which I'm guessing you are also on) has been attacking me publicly. OK, fine. But then don't turn around and contend that Scott is the candidate that will work best with both sides.
This is a pretty typical Party fight. Our point is that it is done, and it is time to put it behind us and move on to November.

We need a strong leader in our local Democratic party that will call out our democratic elected leaders on their BS. For example Pelosi and her continued do nothing but throw more monies at the war. I have set by and watched the DCCC leaders do nothing but carry the party line towards the right of center. It's time for a change and bring our party back to the left. Chris Daly would be the best one to make that happen, but unfortunately he is backing Peskin for that. Itrust Chris so I will have to go along with it for now. In 2010 tou will have a chance to put your name on the next DCCC race if you don't like how things are going.

Supervisor Daly: Never a fan of your brand of politics, I believe that San Franciscans will for years be harmed if your friend and colleague Supervisor Peskin is elected Chair of DCCC.
You will see my letter in this week's Bay Area Reporter further quoting both you and Mr. Peskin on your intent to change the way things are done on the DCCC and how your being termed off the Board of Supervisors seems to have energized you to find new ways to continue legislating from beyond City Hall.
I fear for every day San Franciscans, I fear for your children, I fear for businesses (who will pay taxes to support all that you and Supervisor Peskin want to do?) and I fear for the survival of a united San Francisco.
Similar to the recent Leno v Migden race, I am deeply dismayed at the vitriol and partisan nature this race has taken.
If (your and Supervisor Pekin's) screaming at women, and men, and getting in people's faces and "threatening" people is the direction San Francisco politics is heading, then I fear for all good-natured San Franciscans and our efforts to improve this place, not by heavy handed tactics, but by working together, those who agree and disagree, and by finding compromise in areas of greatest disagreement, and by respectfully(!!) agreeing to disagree, and yet working towards compromise anyway.
I fear Supervisor Peskin's election (with your overwhelming support) at Chair of DCCC, that is why I support Scott and all his efforts.

I fear more for the wholesale auctioning off of San Francisco by Mayor Newsom and his Republicans-in-Democrats-clothing coterie than I do of Peskin or Daly's antics.
We can unify where possible, but need to figure out how to disagree in a healthy manner. Just as Milk and Alice were not able to unify because of political differences, one cannot expect for everyone to put aside all political differences for the sake of unity, given that there are no shared principles of unity.
All that matters here is endorsements. And as far as that goes, Daly and Peskin have been demonstrably more in tune with voters for supervisor than Newsom and his closeted GOP allies.
Let's see, Newsom opposes spending money on affordable housing, opposes getting the PUC into the green power business, supports the militarization of our schools through the JROTC (is it a secret that runaway military spending is responsible for our current economic crisis) and supports paying lazy cops to busting prostitutes while violent crime is skyrocketing in San Francisco.

I almost feared that Daly would replace Marc Salomon as the biggest douschebag in SF politics, but then I came to my senses. Obviously there is room for two equally douschey politicians in this town.
