Sen. Mark Leno wants to stop the chemical industry from pumping toxic crap into products used by babies and kids. SB 772 ought to be a slam dunk -- but the chemical companies are fighting back. There's a plea on Calitics for people to get invoved and help.
Leno's used to this sort of battle, but he told me even he is amazed by the chemical industry's tactics. IF we can't win this one -- a very mild bill protecting children -- you wonder if we can beat these folks at anything.

Thanks Tim! We at the Consumer Federation of California have been very active on this bill and we have set up an action alert on our site so people can send letters directly to their state Assembly and Senators. Please help us take on the chemical industry here:

Will Leno Also Protect Children In Hunters Point From Chemicals Of Lennar Corporation Construction?
It is utterly unconscionable for Mark Leno to take a quite correct stand against unnecessary flame retardants, while at the same time totally selling out the children and adults of the majority people of color Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood, and to even more serious chemical exposures.
For -years- Lennar Corporation has illegally released asbestos and other toxic chemicals while constructing high-end gentrifying condos in the Hunters Point Redevelopment Area. Leno has not only done nothing to stop this criminal outrage, but worse, he is actively and purposely enabling it by authoring and pushing a State give-away that will allow Lennar to open up still more such devastating construction; and outrageously on San Francisco's only urban wetland state park area - Candlestick Point - which is located in that neighborhood.
Leno must step up, withdraw his measure SB-792, and move immediately to halt all of Lennar's construction until it can be proven safe and economically positive for the neighborhood. If he doesn't, he will be remembered from this point on as a hypocritical sell out to powerful real estate interests.
It's time to eat some crow and do the right thing Mark, and protect -all- of the children of California from -all- serious forms of toxic chemical exposure.

LENO the LIAR.
Leno is the latest in a long line of politicos who slipped in via the back door of SF "Electoral" Politics, including Newsom, Elsbernd, Alioto-Pier, Chu. Instead of standing and winning on their own merits they were all initially appointed by machine hacks. Their record is dismal.
Leno is now emulating the deceptive practices and at times outright prevarications employed by Newsom and his handlers. On a recent KPFA interview he flat out lied when he claimed that certain reputable and respected organisations and individuals supported his legislation SB792, which would give a substantial portion of the Candlestick Point State Recreation Area to Lennar so they could build high end condos. To their credit I understand that the folks at KPFA may have issued a 'correction' and set the record straight.
While many of us are thankful that Maxwell is termed out and just waiting to cash in on her years of service and subservience to the speculators and developers, we should be aware that the co-option and corruption continues. Lennar never sleeps, they have another sock puppet in their pocket, and his name is Mark Leno.
