Yes, that sound overhead is the annual display of America's military might, the Blue Angels. And as always, I ask myself: Is this a good idea in a big city?

glen matlock:

So the argument is that something may go wrong with the best laid plans and someone will die? Ironic considering the Bay Guardian cheering for David Campos.

As I was on Valencia having some coffee watching the Blue Angels I wondered how many SF kids were able to extract themselves from the indoctrination of SF schools, and then join up with the military to be indoctrinated by the US military.

What is worse? Wallowing in self pity for your entire life and blaming the conspiracy for your failure, or joining the military and learning that you are the master of your own destiny?

The military isn't what I would consider a great way to go, and they have their own form of brain washing, but being a SF progressive drone is worse, far worse. Taking the chance of being killed for a couple of years in the military as opposed to spending your entire life being a victim and blaming your fellow liberals for your failure?

If I was a kid in SF I would take my chances with the military.

Patrick Monk:

THE BLUE DEVILS STRIKE AGAIN.
This annual misplaced display of military power and domination has to stop. Every year I see the devastating effects on many of my patients, especially Veterans of our foreign adventurism and immigrants from the many countries who have experienced first hand the atrocities of war. Many of them suffer severe traumatic events when old wounds are re-opened. Yesterday I visited one of my patients, a Vet, in his Tenderloin SRO. He was so distraught and shaking he could barely get out of bed to unlock his door. He had been that way ever since the first flyover scared the shit out of him, literally. I spent over an hour helping him clean up and listening while he relived some pretty horrendous events from his time in the Nam.
This fucking crap has to stop. We should be housing and caring for our vets, not further victimizing them. A letter in today's Kronikle by Freddy Sweet made a comparison between this annual waste of taxpayer money and the Roman 'bread and circuses'.
While the empire rots from within, the Masters of War and the "people's representatives" condone and stage such spectacles in an attempt to distract the citizenry from the truth behind the smoke and mirrors and con-trails. The truly sad fact is how many people fail to see ugly truth behind that superficial reflection.

Lucretia Snapples:

Tim - have you considered leaving town during the Blue Angels' appearance? One could write a calendar by the annual appearances of your pearl-clutching pieces crying about how terrified you are by the sound of jet engines. I wonder how you manage when you visit SFO.

And Patrick Monk RN! Have your physician's assistant write the vet a 'scrip for Xanax, tell him to take two and buy a set of Bose noise-canceling head phones.

patmonk [TypeKey Profile Page]:

What a typically crass and insensitive response to the suffering of others.
No wonder you hide behind a pseudonym.
Change it to Borgia ... b***h.

glen matlock:

ummm, Pat, just wondering here, as I live right next to Carnival and am not a fan, can I have them stop? Could I have you write me a note?

Many people seem to enjoy Carnival on Harrison street there, and it brings a lot of the people into the mission to spend money. I bet there are lots of people who don't like it, even vets, maybe we could band together and create some self righteous reason to stop it?

Does the monumental sense of entitlement ever abate with the goofy left? Us peasants are just too stupid for you, our hilarious leftist betters.

How does one become a mental health professional while thinking the rest of us fucking stupid?

Does being a leftist have to mean that you think everyone who doesnt agree with you is an idiot?

Patrick Monk:

Glen, a reasonable reply deserving of a rational response, which I will provide. Right now I'm too busy struggling to finish last weeks patient visit notes, which now have to be done through a totally dysfunctional program, also finishing preparing dinner for the eagerly anticipated return of the missus.
Incidentally I do not consider myself a 'leftist', I eschew labels, though I will soon be chewing chicken; the category I finally arrived at, and am reasonably comfortable in, after years of dodging the question is:-
radicalzenanarcho-yippiehumanistmofo.
More anon.

Carnaval doesn't celebrate the military or serve as a very expensive recruiting tool for the armed forces. And if things went very wrong at Carnaval, 5,000 people wouldn't die.

One of those planes crashes in SF, we're talking major civilian casualities.

glen matlock:

Oddly there seems to be this agenda to end don't ask don't tell in the military, from the left. So I don't know what group of leftists to take my orders from here. The "let gays serve openly" left or "the military is killing me slowly" left, I think I will go with the let them serve openly as I like Devo am for the freedom of choice.

I'm not sure, but the last time I checked joining the military was legal.

I know that progressives like the born again Christians know how us peasants should be living out lives, with the banning of things they both enjoy dreaming of doing to the rest of us, for our own good. Still the point was that the jets annoyed someone, and if annoying people should lead to banning something, why should I have to live with Carnival?

If having to put up with jets is victimizing someone as was said, then I'm a victim of Carnival once a year, amongst hundreds of things I encounter every day that annoy me.

Would it help if I was emotional and made some sort of "what kind of people are we who..." cliche?

The safety issue is a red herring.

Barton:

The Blue Angels:

A collosal waste of public funds during time of economic crisis.

tim redmond:

Glen: Safety is always a red herring until something goes wrong -- then everyone wonders why we didn't have precautions in place ahead of time.

The Blue Angels show is, by its nature, dangerous and risky -- Blue Angels planes have been known to crash during training runs, and it's only a matter of time before one crashes in an air show (and air shows are also dangerous, which is why many are held outside of major urban areas).

As to the military, what can I say, Glen: I'm against marriage, but for gay marriage. I'm against the military (when I was in High School, people hoped their parents would say they were gay so they wouldn't have to go to Vietnam), but if gay people want to serve, they should have the right. Somehow, this is probably contradictory, but it doesn't really bother me:)

Rick Knee:

TO GLEN: You wrote, "What is worse? Wallowing in self pity for your entire life and blaming the conspiracy for your failure, or joining the military and learning that you are the master of your own destiny?"

Anyone who has been in the military will tell you that in that institution, you are a slave to the whims of the people in your chain of command.

TO LUCRETIA: You asked if Tim had "considered leaving town during the Blue Angels' appearance." Do you want to pay his family's travel, meal and lodging expenses, and compensate him and his wife for any wages they'll lose during their trip? Do you want to do that for every resident who objects to the noise pollution and the danger that the Blue Angels create when they fly over the city?

Two issues here.

First recruitment. The Blue Angels are precisely that and nothing more. I did 3 years on carriers. Formation flying is normal. The fancy stuff is for the viewers and to get some kids to sign up. I am not anti military. I am against the way GW used the military.

Second safety. Accidents are more common than one would think. For this reason, I agree that the Blue Angels should not fly over the city.

While lining up to strafe a North Vietnamese PT boat, a piece of wing fell from one of the F8 fighter jets led by commander (later Rear Admiral) Stockdale. For pilot safety, I cannot think of a more critical time to have your aircraft whole. The pilot returned to the ship safe. But if a chunk falls off an FA-18 in the middle of Mission on Saturday at noon? Someone could be hurt or killed. Not worth the chance.

bob:

Just curious. The blue angels fly three days out of the year. How many commercial airline flights fly over SF every day?
How do you reconcile your safety concerns with the blue angels with the amount of flights flying over SF every day?
The blue angels only fly over SF - all stunts are done over the water so other than flying speed 500-600 for a commercial jet - 700 for blue angels, I dont see a difference.
