State Sen. Mark Leno is asking the leadershiop of the state Democratic Party to pass an emergency measure opposing Pacific Gas and Electric Co's plans for a statewide initiative against public power.
Leno told me he will travel to San Diego Nov. 14th to personally introduced a resolution to the party's Executive Board putting the party on record in opposition to the measure. The company has been paying signature gatherers to collect enough names to place the measure on next spring's statewide ballot.
The board is meeting that weekend. Since this would be an emergency measure, Leno said, any member of the Resolutions Committee could block it. But Leno thinks that's unlikely; "who," he asked, "is going to stand up and defend PG&E right now?"

This is the same Democrat Party that passed "deregulation" unanimously, the same Democrat Party that is keeping Wall Street intact, hoping to re-inflate the financial bubble, the same Democrat Party which is delivering Americans in bulk as captive customers of the health insurers, the same Democrat Party that is supporting a landowner giveaway with Prop D, and the same Democrat Party that is giving away parkland for luxury condominiums at Hunters Point.
I'm glad that Mark Leno is on the right side here, but it is going to take much more than a Democrat Party resolution opposing PG&E to preserve a public option in power.
Just like the Democrats stood on principle against the recall in 2003, in the middle of the tracks as the train barreled down on them, just like wringing their hands about the 2/3 requirement for a budget, it is going to take a more aggressive stance to successfully challenge corporate dominance of the political system.
We need to move past the "piss on my leg and tell me its raining" portion of our program.
