Jackie Beat: "Hung Puerto Rican elves only"

|

Generously talented and fantastically energetic (we're talking 8-bit chipmunk here) LA drag entertainer Jackie Beat is in town with her new show "Jackie Beat's All-You-Can-Eat Christmas," Fri/10 and Sat/11 and Brava Theater. It sounds like a real festive hoot. The long-time cabaret circuit favorite, underground club hostess, and member of scandalous electro-revival band Dirty Sanchez pulled out her giant fork and dug into a little interview with us about ambrosia salad, abortion, AM schlock .. and that's just the beginning. Go pay some money to see her!

Party Radar: Tiara Sensation Pageant will be Some Thing special

|
(0)

Right out of the glitter-strewn gate, when it launched a year ago, I knew that Some Thing was "special." The weekly Friday drag night (with crafts table!) at the Stud not only filled the city's missing weekly alternative drag hole left behind by Trannyshack, but it managed to bring something unique, channeling a new sensibility rising in the children that respected traditional performance as well as punk-rock theatrics, and loved to play with the expectations that had arisen around both. The club, headed by VivvyAnne ForeverMore, Glamamore, and DJ Downey, grew out of their ambitiously arty Monday weekly Tiara Sensation, also at the Stud. The threesome -- who emanate a intellectual grace as well as a healthy appreciation of improvisatory surrealism and wry humor -- have made Some Thing not just the Friday night home base for altqueers, but also a showcase of the diversity of queer dance music styles, with ear-opening DJs guesting every week.

It's time for the annual, incredibly creative Miss Tiara Sensation Pageant, Sun/5, and the popular Some Thing crew is moving it from the Stud to Temple to accomodate their larger dreams for the contest. (You can read the particulars in my Super Ego column this week). This year, the pageant will be a star-studded fundraiser for awesome local fringe theater The Offcenter.  I spoke with philosophy-clad cyber-showgirl Vivvy about Some Thing's anniversary, the big Tiara to-do, and some of her favorite glamour looks.

Flagging in the Park: the whirl story

|

"This is the gayest thing I've ever done in my life!" laughed my friend Ricky Strawberry as he twirled around and around, unfurling lengths of tie-dyed cloth to Hi-NRG dance tracks from a live DJ in the sunshine. If you know Ricky Strawberry, that's pretty damn sparkly pink unicorn in a rainbow thong bathing under a Splenda waterfall gay. In fact, it was the gayest thing anyone in my pinko posse had ever done, as well, and we had a ball. It was gay, it was amazing, it was gaymazing, and you should do it too.

It? Flagging in the Park, the summertime monthly gathering of fluttering human butterflies in the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. I wrote about it in this week's Super Ego nightlife column -- and it happens for the final time this year on Sat/2, 1 p.m.- 4p.m.

Ah, yes -- the fleeting maybe yes/ maybe no of San Francisco summer has (possibly) arrived. And even if the weather doesn't quite cooperate, at least we all feel our spirits lift and our clothing constrict. Fortunately, there are many, many parties to rip it all off at! Not literally, but why not? Besides some of the parties listed in this week's Super Ego clubs column, here's a few more at which you can run wild and free and hot.
