Let's get lost
WE WERE LOST , and now we're found. Shortly after the year
began, we were lost in the miasma of war in Iraq. As the year closes
and we've supposedly won the battle, we're still sorta ... lost.
And what have we found, kids? That it's really hard to compile a
top 10 of new releases when you're still worried about the future,
the war, the election. Or you'd rather be watching CSI or
listening to a reissue of a more-than-30-year-old album. (How does
one go about actually putting together a year-end top 10? It's such
a maddeningly subjective, spur-of-the-moment, and agenda-ridden
process. We can't have 50 Cent rubbing shoulders with Ja Rule. It's
all so ten-tative, to quote Bay Guardian arts editor Johnny
Ray Huston.) Still, a lot of music came out last year, plenty got
lost in the hustle, and we even discovered a thing or two. Hence
the Bay Guardian music writers' favorite lost-and-found stories
of 2003 and their always educational year-end music lists. For everyone
something to loathe and a whole lotta love. What are your
favorite songs or albums of 2003? E-mail your lists to noise@sfbg.com
