Sonic Reducer Overage: Of Montreal, Spinnerette, Jessie Evans, and more

By Kimberly Chun

Foggy city, music-clogged city – you offer up so much to do and see. And I’m not even counting that hard-working mama in No Doubt. Have a few more worthy shows that didn’t make it to print.

Dragging an Ox Through Water
The oxy lad is just back from opening for Jackie-O Motherfucker in Europe. With Sic Alps, Linda Hagood, and Tom Greenwood. Thurs/23, 9 p.m., $7. Hemlock Tavern, 1131 Polk, SF. (415) 923-0923.

Extra Action Marching Band and Jessie Evans

No intro needed for the brassy Bay gang – which was graced with David Byrne’s presence at its Uptown show (right after the band opened for Byrne at the Greek). Ex-Vanishing lady Jessie Evans materializes, too, with a healthy supply of sax appeal. With Bronze and Something Experience. Thurs/23, 9 p.m., $10. Eagle Tavern, 398 12th St., SF. (415) 626-0880.

Handsome Family
Alt-country with a strong whiff of swampy, bottomless American gothic, anyone? With a side, by gum, of Green Goddess dressing. With Daniel Knox. Thurs/23, 9 p.m., $12. Bottom of the Hill, 1233 17th St., SF. (415) 621-4455.

The Drums
John Dwyer and Anthony Petrovic reign in their very own rhythm nation, as part of Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival. With Wendy Farina and Bianca Sparta, William Winant Trio, Weasel Walter, Moe! Staiano, and Jason Gonzales. Fri/24, 9 p.m., $5. Argus Lounge, 3187 Mission, SF. (415) 824-1447.

Of Montreal
Prepare to party as OM honcho Kevin Barnes rouses himself from his funk once more. With Jon Brion. Fri/24, 8 p.m., $27.50. Fox Theater, 1807 Telegraph, Oakl.

Why DIY? Local musicians will give you a hand in creating your own instruments from recyclables and ordinary crap you find around the house. And then check out acoustic performances by junk lovers who’ve been making their own instruments much longer than you. With the Goat Family, One Man Banjo, Aesthetic Cling, 5 Cent Coffee, Reverend and Missus McCubbin, Just Henry, Vagabondage, and Liquor Cake. Bring junk to make instruments. Sat/25, 11 a.m., free. Marx Meadow, Golden Gate Park, SF.

Soul Clap
I got a bad case of the (soul) clap. Meaning, yours truly and other fun folks like Mt st mtn’s Jay Howell, Birdman Recs’ David Katz-Nelson, and Soul Party’s Paul Costuros will be judging this dance contest. Mon/27, 9 p.m., $5. Elbo Room, 647 Valencia, SF. (415) 552-7788.

Miss Brody Dalle of the Distillers? She’s still spinning - after wedding Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme and having a baby girl. With Mini Mansions and Woah Hunx. Mon/27, 9 p.m., $14. Great American Music Hall, 859 O’Farrell, S.F. (415) 885-0750.

Getcher fierce pop right here - from the London upsetters. Tues/28, 8 p.m., $12. Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell, SF. (415) 861-2011.
