Guardian intern Michael Harkin throws down on the occasion of Syd Barrett's passing, announced today, July 11:

The "Madcap" back in the day.

Alas! Word around the hood is that Syd Barrett has passed away—sad news for Pink Floyd fans and psych enthusiasts everywhere. Nobody was expecting new material anytime soon from Barrett, who never attempted to reappear after vanishing into an unproductive, drug-induced haze. Read more »

The vast reservoirs of affection we have for Devendra Banhart never quite run dry - and that goes triple for visual artist Chris Cobb.

Cobb, the guy in charge of the color-coding book trick at Adobe Books a year and a half ago, is exhibiting art revolving around Banhart, a former SF Art Institute student, at New Langton Arts in San Francisco. The show opens tomorrow, July 11, and will be up through July 15. Read more »

NOISE: Desmond Dekker, RIP

Ska legend Desmond Dekker died on May 25 in his home in England. Guardian calendar editor Duncan Scott Davidson writes in praise of the Jamaica native:

"Oh Lord, it is not easy," Desmond Dekker sings in falsetto on his track "It Is Not Easy." "I work and I toil/ Yet I suffer all the while/ Trying to live a life on my own/ I don't want to end up like Al Capone." The suffering has ended for Dekker; he succumbed to a heart attack on May 25. NOISE: Not that Duchess -- Her Grace the Duchess!

|
()

Correction time! Apologies go out to Duchess and Her Grace the Duchess. I wrote that Christy Schnabel's Duchess was playing a Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival show Thursday, May 18. That's not happening. Perhaps she'll swing through town soon but she won't be coming through that day. Instead, check out her new self-titled album on Blackball.

Rather, Her Grace the Duchess is playing that night at 12 Galaxies. A big boo-boo, and likely the last time we get that wrong. Read more »

NOISE: ArnoCorps want to pump you up

Contributor Dennis Harvey writes in to praise ArnoCorps:

arnocorps.jpg

When they said "Ahhhl be baaahhck," wasn't that a promise?!? I fear not. It appears May 20's headlining Café du Nord appearance by ArnoCorps, purportedly Austrian "pioneers of Action-Adventure Hardcore rock 'n' roll," may be their last for the foreseeable future.

They are returning to die Vaterland‹or close, at least, with summer dates in England and Ireland. Read more »
