Did someone say "meaty-nog"? Neat-o holiday drinks


Tipsy-minded intern Jonathan Beckhardt pulled together some drink recipes for the season ....

For Jews, the only thing worse than getting so lost in moments of extreme immorality that you start begging Jesus for forgiveness, is drinking eggnog. I asked Rabbi Greenfield about this cultural development in the diaspora. "I have no idea what you're talking about, Jon" said the learned man. I guess, but at the Beckhardt house, there are only two things grandpa cracks out the belt for: checking out gentiles and the aforementioned eggnog sin. Fortunately, I've been cast aside from my family and can now fearlessly experiment with Christian Spiritualism. Thus, I now embark on a new era of enjoyment with these recipes to guide me.

Classic eggnog in B
I won't write about classic eggnog for most people have a good recipe, and I couldn't cast the necessary expertise on the subject. I would like to draw attention to the recipes that add a little bit of bourbon. According to the Food Network, whiskey has an ingredient in it that makes hangovers especially bad, and eggnog has an ingredient that counters that ingredient in whiskey. Unfortunately, the Food Network wouldn't elaborate on that statement, so I'm working on finding out the actual ingredients they are referring to, but nonetheless, it seems like a match made in heaven.

8 large eggs
3 cups whole milk
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup bourbon
1/2 cup Cognac
1 teaspoon vanilla

1) Heat milk in large pot
2) Whisk egg and sugar in large bowl
3) Add milk slowly into sugar and egg bowl, transfer to pot
4) Stir in other ingredients
5) Let the drink relax in your fridge for 24 hours.

Eric's Egg nog
This is the eggnog recipe of the bartender who came up with the Snovocaine. I liked the addition of the Grand Marnier to give it a little orange touch. You could take it a little further by adding a little orange essence at the end.

6 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup golden rum
1 pint 1/2 and 1/2
1 pint milk
2 oz Grand Marnier

1) Beat eggs until light and fluffy
2) Add sugar and salt, beat until thick and lemon-colored.
3) Stir in rum, 1/2 and 1/2, milk, and Grand Marnier
4) Chill 3 hours
5) Serve 1 cup with 1/4 oz Grand Marnier floater, up in a nutmeg-rimmed martini glass garnished with a mint tear.

Some vegetarians are also christians. They can kinda honor God with this drink. I wanted to find an eggnog recipe that didn't include instant pudding. I tried it though, and liked it a lot more than the tofu-based recipe I've had in year's past.

1 cup milk
6 cups 1/2 and 1/2
12 oz package of french vanilla instant pudding
1/2 cups sugar
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/3 tsp cinnamon
2 cups rum

1) Combine the pudding mix with 1 cup of milk to create the pudding.
2) Add in everything else.

First Admiral's Meaty-Nog
Now that we got rid of the vegetarians, we can get down to business. I've been enjoying eggnog a lot so far. And the thicker, heavier it's been has been the better. So why not get it even heartier? This is similar to a classic eggnog, except it has about a third the sugar, and no vanilla, as well as some meaty additions. The MSG (Accent) in this recipe is optional, but you might want to try it out. I was not completely in love with its addition as it thickened the flavor further, but gave it a little tang. Others at my nog-fete liked it plenty, though. I would recommend trying to find low sodium bouillon.

8 eggs
1/4 cup sugar
4 cups rum
6 cups 1/2 and 1/2
2 cup cream
1 Chicken bouillon cube
1 bay leaf
dash of Accent
dash of nutmeg

1) Whisk eggs until fluffy.
2) Add bay leaf, put on medium heat, whisk in sugar.
3) Whisk in rest of ingredients

This can be served hot or cold.

The recipe is actually good. I gave a cup to my friend's girlfriend, without telling her what's in it. She bowled over in enjoyment. It is still in its development phase and I am thinking that maybe the appropriate thing for next yet would be to halve the bouillon quantity, add some mushrooms, baste it over a turkey, and collect it at the bottom.

This is the thing they drink for eggnog in Northern Europe. Someone made it for me a few years back, I liked it, and this is the recipe I got.
ngredients (serves 2-3 persons)

1 bottle of white wine)
5 eggs
4 tablespoons of sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cloves
Juice of half a lemon
dash of cinnamon

1) Whisk sugar into eggs, then slowly add wine
2) Cook it just below boil, adding other ingrediants.
3) Serve hot.

I'm also on the trails of this drink (which translates to Viennese Flaming Fire Tongs Punch). All I'm able to find out about it is from about.com, which I don't trust. I can't tell if it's just a novelty drink made famous from a book, or movie (like making Flaming Homers for your friends), or something really great.
