There's a new fashion in the mayor's race, and it's ... accessories! This new mailer says to vote for Sup. David Chiu because he knows how to accessorize -- check out the cool glasses, and the sensible yet snazzy shoes and the high-tech wristwatch. Oh, and there's a laptop/cell phone/ipad, a checkbook, a scissors, a red pen, a calculator and a set of scales, which I assume are to measure out justice and not medical marijuana. Although that's fashionable, too. On the back of the mailer a nicely-dressed line of people stands out in front of City Hall in some sort of synchronized dance step; they all have their left hands pointed up. Cute.

The thing with stereotypes is that they have truth in them

Stats show Asians out-performing even whites academically, financially and professionally, and are way ahead of other ethnic groups.

The only reason they don't have more power in the US is because they are only 4% of the national population. But in SF, they are almost one third.

Don't under-estimate them and their ambition. Colectively, they aren't particularly left-wing.

One more point on that subject

I actually love the fact that the Guardian prints a critical article right beneath the ad.

1. It shows independence from one's advertisers, which is exactly what we don't see enough of in the corporate press.

2. It's sort of karmic justice to take his cash and then sling mud at him. Small time stuff compared to the way Treacherous Chiu treated the progressives who elected him, but I do like the gesture.

Well that's two points, so sue me.
