Norman Yee, president of the School Board, is running in the tighly contested race for District 7, one of the most conservative districts in the city. Yee talked about the sorts of things you'd expect a district candidate to talk about -- public safety (and pedestrian safety, an issue particularly important to Yee, who was seriously injured by a car), public schools, keeping libraries open, and parks.

But he also talked about citywide concerns -- he's a supporter of Local Hire, supports the City College parcel tax, and wants to see an audit of city-owned land to look for places to build affordable housing. He supports a program to legalize existing in-law units if they're brought up to code.

Didn't Yee support Chiu for Mayor?

Can't see progressives liking that, although you can't blame him for playing the asian card whenever he can.

David Chiu is a raving communist when compared to much of D7. Yee or Crowley appear to be preferable to Mike Garcia, the libertarian capitalist.

The fact that he supports a

The fact that he supports a parcel tax makes him a nonstarter for D7.
I am a homeowner in D7 and we're tired of being the ATM panacea for SF govt overspending and incompetence. How about a renters tax to pay for SF City College or just charge more tuition.

Yeah we need another parcel-taxman-affordable-housing-Rose-Pak stooge on the stupes.

of Non Profit Inc and we are sick of it.

Furthermore - Yee is the president of the SFUSD school board and many of us here are pissed about the district's policy on school assignments - of which Yee is a major architect. He may be thinking he can skate by into office by having an Asian surname but that's not going to work in this district - there aren't enough Asians to strategically vote the way they do in other districts, so at some point he's going to have to answer as to why he supports numerous policies that the hardworking residents of D7 find totally abhorrent.

Progressives and union stooges, like FX Crowley and Norman Yee, are going to find it hard work getting elected in D7.

Most school board members don't care about schools

Are there any school board members who actually care about schools? Or are they all trying to use the school board as a stepping-stone to a political career?

Jill Wynns has been on the board for decades and has never run for supervisor or mayor, to her credit.

Jane Kim/Eric Mar/Yee, etc., etc., were/are merely trying to jump-start a political career.

Your D7 Candidates:

Norman Yee: Progressive supported by Chinatown special interests, hiding behind education to pose as a moderate, appears slightly out of depth. (Supported by Avalos)

FX Crowley: classic moderate catholic irish union boss, in a district where pension reform is huge, homeboy appears 30 years too late. (Supported by Feinstein)

Mike Garcia: Libertarian who is beloved by developers (and no on else) for his work on board of appeals, they appear happy to support his campaign with tons of money, direct and ies. (Supported by Incumbent Sean Elsbernd)

Joel Engardio: Good Government type, but a wannabe who's positions seem to always cater to what people want to here. (Supported by former Supervisor Quentin Kopp)

The rest have no chance. Question is, does the progressive Yee win because Garcia and Crowley split the vote with Engardio getting a fair share? Three moderates more or less and yee, with a good chunk of asians in a district ed lee won.

Excellent analysis

Except RCV will ensure Yee doesn't sneak in on the Asian vote. Asians will mark Yee first and then either exhaust their ballots (ensuring he's eliminated after the first or second round) or chose a candidate more in line with their economic interests - and that'll be either Garcia or Engardio.

I'd also point out that Ed Lee won D7 because he was the most moderate candidate. Newsom also won D7 in both his elections.

D7 Endgame

Yes, Ed Lee won because he was the establishment moderate, even steamrolling native Tony Hall.

If RCV works and the moderate candidate wins, it will be either Garcia or Crowley. Engardio isn't well known, and lacks the deep community presence (read old boy network) that the others have. Not even one child at SI.

But Garcia is going after Crowley hard, so Yee may sneak in as the two establishment backed moderates with Catholic bases obliterate each other. You bet downtown is watching this, hoping the two don't nuke each other.

Mike Garcia actually got up in front of the Rules Committee in 2005 and disclosed privileged closed session information to the Supervisors and broadcast it on SFGTV without getting a vote of Ethics to disclose.

Alice endorsed Garcia number 2, behind Crowley. Crowley had the support, and Elsbernd/Wiener got him to number 2. They just desperately want to avoid Yee, the progressive, winning in D7.

Garcia is a former libertarian, ethically lax individual, but he is not progressive, so Toklas gave him a rather weak number 2 endorsement.

District 7

FX Crowley grew up in the district,lives there still and will be a strong voice for working class and middle class in the city. Being a union leader and a former member of the PUC, are positive qualities and he'll bring leadership and integrity to the BOS.

Norman Yee - Is he harassing his tenants?

There is much talk in the inner-sunset regarding what some view as Mr. Yee's non-stop attempts to boot a single mother and her young daughter out of a duplex he owns on Irving St., so that he can realize a higher sale price (apparently the building is on the market).

Apparently it is getting ugly. ...
