Rachel Norton, one of three incumbents seeking re-election to the San Francisco School Board, sees herself as an advocate for parents, particularly parents of special-ed kids. She told us she was proud of the dramatic gains the district has made in some of the lowest-achieving schools and said that in her time on the board, the district has done a remarkable job of managing its budget. She wants to make school food a major priority in the next four years and will be pushing the idea of building a central kitchen so food can be prepared locally instead of shipped in from the midwest.

She also explained her vote to defy the teachers union and protect junior teachers at 14 schools from layoffs.

You can hear the entire interview after the jump.

Her own child is in special ed.

She works more than full time (50 hours per week) on school issues.

That comes to about $2.50 per hour, given that the stipend for board members is $500 per month.

She is one of the only SFUSD commisioners EVER who is not holding the job merely as a springboard to higher office (supervisor, mayor, etc)

San Francisco Voters:
Please vote for Rachel Norton for re-election to the Board of Education. Rachel has common sense, integrity, and has proven herself to be a tireless advocate for San Francisco’s students. She's the hardest working member of the School board and deserves another term. I urge anyone who cares about kids in San Francisco Public Schools to vote to re-elect Rachel.

Hope to talk to next year when you on the Board again. We met at the Election Office When we signed up. I was running for supervisor for District 7.
