Supervisors consider Western SoMa Plan, lots of new condos, and "the purple building"

If "the purple building" becomes condos, nightlife advocates fear clashes with throngs of 11th Street clubgoers.
Mike Koozmin/SF Newspaper Co.

The fate of the “purple building” – which has become caught up in the clash between nightlife and residential interests on the clubgoer-saturated 300-block of 11th Street – remains undecided as the Western SoMa Community Plan heads into its first hearing before the Board of Supervisors Land Use and Economic Development Committee on Monday.

As we reported in this week's paper, a unique citizen-based task force has spent the last eight years developing the plan, which will allow thousands of units of new housing – most of it along Folsom Street – to move forward once the plan gets final approval from the board. But the California Music & Culture Association and other nightlife advocates successfully amended the plan to ban new housing on that 11th Street block as the Planning Commission approved it in December.

Yet the commission also decided to grandfather in a 24-home project at 340 11th Street, the so-called purple building, which nightlife advocates say would put those new residents on a collision course with Slim's, DNA Lounge, and other big nightclubs on that busy block. As we went to press, both sides and District 6 Sup. Jane Kim were all hopeful that a compromise was imminent, likely involving switching from residential to office.

But with just days to go before that hearing, building owner Tony Lo still hasn't decided whether to make the change or fight it out in front of the supervisors. His architect John Goldman – whose residential design for the site was placed on hold by the city since shortly after he submitted it in 2005 – had hoped to hear by now but he's still waiting for Lo to make the call.

“Based on my analysis, it looks feasible to change to offices if you want to do it, and I mean feasible financially and architecturally and planning-wise,” Goldman today told the Guardian, referring to what he told Lo.

Meanwhile, Western SoMa Task Force Chair Jim Meko – who has not been supportive of tweaking the plan after all the work he oversaw – yesterday sent out an email blast to stakeholders and supporters urging them to attend Monday's hearing and show support for the plan.

“You don't often get a chance to participate in making decisions about your own neighborhood from start to finish. Some special interest groups are expected to come out of the woodwork to take pot shots at the Plan so the hundreds of participants in this process need to make their voices heard. Your testimony at the hearing next week will make all the difference,” Meko wrote.

The hearing starts at 10am in board chambers in City Hall. This item might have been heard later in the day considering the agenda opens with a continuation of the controversial condo lottery bypass legislation, on which Board President David Chiu and others have been trying to forge a compromise between tenant advocates and homeowner groups. But committee Chair Scott Wiener just told us that item “will be continued. No compromise yet.”

Hilarious! You've redefined Hypocrisy, pleb. Do you ever read your own posts, pleb? You should have read the one I'm responding to because what you wrote applies to you, pleb. But being thick you didn't realize that. It is signature you, pleb, and so typical of a remedial amateur troll. You must try harder, pleb. You'd never be accepted into the International Troll Society at the rate you're going. Not a chance. They'd slam the door in your face. Maybe they already did. Maybe that's your problem. Do try harder... without hypocrisy, pleb.

Their goal is for the lemmings to fling themselves off of the cliff unified, any efforts to seek other outcomes that don't involve lemmings in the sea is divisive.

Dismissing anyone with a different viewpoint as a "Troll" is the last resort of the refuted, but seemingly the first resort of the low-IQ denizens of this forun.

Up above, Marcos wrote that we have had enough of anon.

Suggestion: It's best not to read anything "anon" writes.

Then Guest added:

"Eddie, you're too good of a poster here to waste time taking anon's bait, no matter how vile the post. There's nothing more satisfying than watching one of the resident trolls write something that gets zero response. After a few weeks of that treatment, I suspect anon, Lucretia, and others will move on elsewhere where they can find someone else to satisify some pathetic need for attention, even if it's negative attention."

That's exactly what I was going to say. And that's standard practice for dealing with trolls. I've noticed that some sites have gone so far as to turn off comments because their site turned into what this site has become. Also, lately the resident trolls on this site seem to be trying to be even more obnoxious, especially that Lucretia writing the most hateful and vile stuff. The other day Lucretia wrote some sick post about pity someone is not dead (referring to another commenter). I thought the BG would have removed that comment but they left it on. Some comments feel like they must be responded to because of ignorance, misinformation, hatred and vile remarks. But it's best not to respond. Because no one's mind gets changed by responding to the ignorance, misinformation, hatred and vile remarks of that "Guest," "anon," "Lucretia" and... there's probably another one. And the ignorance, misinformation, hatred and vile remarks are put out there for the sole purpose of getting a reaction to give the resident troll attention so they can start arguing and being vile/nasty (their hobby). If the resident trolls are completely ignored by everyone including the BG staff, they will likely go away at some point. There would be no reason for them to stay here.

posts as "Anon" or "Guest". and yet he uses the term "we" to describe what he persondally thinks.

That could easily be a workable definition of insanity.

The other idea is that we could have genuine two-way debates here, rather than group-think and circle jerks.

How did San Franciscans end up trapped between vicious trolls pimping for corporate power on one side, and a weakened progressive movement that is anemic on its best days that has long since lost its killer instinct to play FTW and is relegated to decomposing into accommodation with corporate rule?

Posted by marcos on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 8:49 am

Most SF'ers are neither left-wing trolls or right-wing trolls. They are simply ordinary people hoping for a better economy with little interest in politics.

Posted by Guest on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 9:04 am

Affluent and ambitious people are moving to the cities from the suburbs. The new residents want enhanced livability, reduced crime, better schools, and home ownership.

San Francisco is not the hotbed of Progressive politics it used to be. Times have changed.

Posted by Guest on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 9:29 am

left-wing politics have become ineffective, and of course he is correct, his error is only in thinking that is because the progressive movement has failed. It's true that fragmentation, infighting and self-absorption have diluted the progressive message. But the much bigger factor is simply the demographic changes.

SF's rep as being a "sanctuary for losers" has declined as the voting populace of the city has come to realize that we cannot afford to take in every economic inactive person in the country just because they think it is "cool" here.

Tim understands these demographics much better, which is why his "hate the rich" pieces, while naive, shallow and transparent, do acknowledge why progressive policies are really failing to get traction. The voters have changed. They're still liberal, but they are not into self-destructive socialist policies. Maybe once, but not now.

indicates megalomania. A "sick fuck" like you needs help.

Posted by Eddie on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 10:05 am

poster a "fuck"? Or otherwise abuse them?

And then you wonder why so few people listen to you or are persuaded by you?

Posted by anon on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 10:18 am

you don't debate. You are using these comment pages as some sort of outlet for your derangement.

Here's a tip: it won't work. The sickness will remain. The tone of your comments, the constant personal attacks, and the name calling all point to undiagnosed mental illness.

Sorry I called you a fuck, but you are a sick individual.

The intent is to try and impart a sense of hopelessness among progressively-minded folks.

They attempt this by spreading misinformation and echoing reactionary talking points.

This trollery is a subset of common trollery, because it is politically motivated and there is a strong component of vitrolic hatred involved; it's not simply done out of a malformed sense of "fun."

It would be well if *everybody* could be spared from all this crap here, but ignoring them on an ad hoc basis is no solution. The content remains uncontested.

The next logical step might indeed be to eliminate comments: *exactly* what the troll(s) want(s).

I think the proper course is to answer each comment, while being careful to the utmost to avoid the tendency to thereby seem to impart undeserved respect to the malingerers. They are akin to rabies-infected parrots who say the same nonsense over and again despite it having been disproven.

If anything can make the trolls go away -- or at least keep them from their intended objective -- it will be ridicule.

That's the basis for by Big List Of Troll Tropes:

1 Presidents always move to the center

2 Progressive ideas are not popular

3 All politicians lie

4 "Purity progressives" can't compromise

5 Nader lost the election for Gore

6 Progressives have situational ethics

7 Progressives ignore pressing problems while promoting pet projects.

8 Progressives want to tell everyone else how to run their lives

9 Progressives call anybody a troll who doesnt' agree with them

10 Anybody who thinks the police must have proper civilian oversight is a "cop hater."

11 Corporations don't pay taxes

12 Poor people here are actually quite wealthy.

13 Rent control represents newcomers subsidizing those already here.

14 Social Security adds to the deficit

15 Non-criminals have nothing to fear from police investigation.

16 San Francisco "exceptionalism" is behind pro-democratic intitiatives

17 "Only whiners show up at public meetings"

18 Progressive leaders and intellectuals are crazy

19 Most Americans supported the war on Iraq."

It doesn't matter what name you've adopted at any particular time, that one is -- pardon the pun -- going to stick.

Intertesting, however, that someone who engages in so much self-masturbatory posts here would so quickly come up with that word.

Posted by anon on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 11:06 am

psychic pus represented by your incessant spew of spongiform tripe on this forum, then -- for a complete switch! -- you are 100% correct. Momentus day.

anon(etc.), you are just a fool but as a fool you nonetheless still represent a danger to we who value truth, justice, and the American way.

The reason? Your breed of deceptivly nonchalant fool can weave so foolery into itself that the very act of disentangling it often leads the person doing so to unknowingly become enmeshed; like a fisherman getting caught on his own line.

There are the common hooks you use -- as easily recognizable as those listed above -- but there are also other bits of pollution -- more clandestine or matter-of-factly told -- which need to be rooted out and dispatched.

I liken fighting your trollery to fighting fennel, I know the most effective policy is for total eradication of the plant right down to the tap root. I seek to dismiss *every* iota of nonsense you attempt to spread here and the number system I've implemented is just a tool to that end.

Your comments need to be looked at with greater care because despite your half-witted pretense of persecution -- you regularly escape the full opprobrium you ought to reap here.

(And, yes, I take pleasure at being able to say you are a fool and show why that's true. I'm shameless... sometimes I even have trouble getting out of the house...)

Posted by lillipublicans on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 1:45 pm

Too bad it's only a rent-controlled rathole that will not be your home once your landlord decides he is tired of your low-rent, under-employed ass and kicks you out.

The public library has computers. You will still be able to post here, as long as you can stand the stench of all the homeless there.

I wrote the post at 3.51a.m.

lillipublicans responded:

It would be well if *everybody* could be spared from all this crap here, but ignoring them on an ad hoc basis is no solution. The content remains uncontested.

[Response: From my experience, it doesn't matter the content is uncontested; no one's mind is changed regardless.]

I think the proper course is to answer each comment, while being careful to the utmost to avoid the tendency to thereby seem to impart undeserved respect to the malingerers.

[Response: Nobody has that much time---except people whose hobby is arguing with others and the approach you're suggesting has not worked in the past on any site. That's why some sites have discontinued comments entirely because nothing they tried worked. The problem remained.]

I like your list of 20 things. That's spot-on. And I knew when I came back that the Guest whose signature word is "hilarious" would have put out bait (for Marcos) but Marcos did *not* take the bait. Right-on!

How's it hanging?

Posted by anon on Feb. 25, 2013 @ 3:56 pm

Let them build on 11th street HOEVER, there should be something written in any selling agreement notifying buyers that they are smack dab in a music entertainment zine and should shut the F up about loud music and crowds. The clubs were there first and should stay put. I hate when people buy in business and entertainment areas and then bitch about traffic and noise. That's what the suburbs are for.

Posted by Guest on Feb. 26, 2013 @ 3:26 pm

But in practice, once they are there, it will make a difference. Clubs need to soundproof their premises and have security people outside as well to ensure that their "clients2 do not distrub the people who pay the taxes that make their fun possible.

The tax-paying voters are only willing to put up with so much "fun" from kids running wild.

Posted by Guest on Feb. 26, 2013 @ 3:41 pm

I totally agree with Guest about putting it in the buyers contract, etc etc. But we both know that's not how it works. You couldn't enforce that even if you did put it in there. No, if you build it, they will come. And when hundreds of them come, now the supe in that district has hundreds of new wealthy (and very whiny) constituents to deal with. And all of them will be putting political pressure on the supe now.

I live in the area. I moved in BECAUSE of the night life available.

However, some people blame nightclubs for crime, and that's not entirely true. There's drug houses in the area that the police know about and do nothing about. There's tons of homeless in the area (SF in general of course), there's needles all over the ground and people passed out. People pushing shopping carts all night, picking up anything off the ground and trying to sell you the Street Sheet, and carrying disassembled stolen bike parts.

Every day, I play the game of "dog or human?" on my way to work. There are a ton of SROs in the area, and they're usually up to no good. Just take a walk around Howard Ave, from 11th to 6th.

And THEN, if you don't have your car broken into in 30 minutes, SFMTA will give you a parking ticket and tow you, and you WISH all you had to deal with is a broken window.

Get rid of the army of crackheads and shopping cart pushers, get rid of the "Change? Spare change? Can you help me out?" Get rid of the tent city on Division, and you could charge triple for a condo.

But somehow the nightclubs are the problem.

The nightclubs are the only good thing about the place, otherwise it would be hell.
