Today's vexing question

Question Mark (and not of the Mysterians).

It's a lovely June day in LA with the gloom burning off and my son graduating elementary school. So, I thought I might leave you with this simple question:

Why do the same people that believe an assault weapons ban is a waste of time because "criminals can always get guns" also believe that an abortion ban will end abortions?

See ya after the ceremonies!

Comments

Gun control forces people to go to the black market to get the guns they need to defend their families.

Abortion control drives young mothers into the black market for abortions, costing more and taking more health risks.

So you are in favour of liberating gun control now? Whoop-di-doop?

And aren't you too old to have a kid in elementary school?

And I'm male. You do know the difference between male and female reproductive capabilities, yes?

As for your last sentence, I assume that you're too old to be in your mother's basement, but there you are all the same.

Do kids "graduate" from elementary school now? Guess it's time to move all the participation trophies to the basement!

In the Woody Allen sense.

Both are choices, a pregnant woman and a would-be gun owner can opt to get the product or service or not. Here's the rub, a person looking to get "protection" for their home do not NEED to purchase a firearm when they can buy alternatives like a bat or a home security system. A female, since birth and barring any genetic changes or physical damage, is "wired" from the beginning to give birth. Men do not have to ever worry about getting pregnant.

Yes, you can say that females chose to have intercourse, but once again, they're starting with a biological liability that men do not have. Yes, they can and should use protection, but things happen and nobody is perfect. So women should be given an option that men do not have to. And lets remind everyone that going for an abortion is not an easy decision, its something that the person getting it will live with for the rest of their lives.

This brings us back to the control question for both abortion and guns. Lets not kid ourselves, all the so-called gun control isn't the nightmare scenarios that the gun manufacturers lobby (aka the NRA) paints. Most gun control legislation has been neutered across the country. That isn't something you can say for abortion control, where in most states its nearly impossible. Gun control mainly is the attempt to get a back ground check to insure crazies and other unstable potentially dangerous folks do not obtain a "tool" whose only purpose is to maim and kill. Secondly, many gun control legislation is also an attempt to prohibit the types of ammunition (i.e. "cop killer" bullets) for sale and/or the amount thereof. In almost all gun control legislation there is no attempt to repeal the Second Amendment or take away peoples guns. So at the end of the day, guns are still for sale, you don't have to go to a back alley to get a pistol (if you want one legally).

Now lets look at abortion. The Kermit Gosnell case highlights exactly why we need to have abortion available. Abortion control basically means you cannot get it and will have to seek more unsanitary and less legal ways to terminate a pregnancy. Yes, in many instances abortion control in most of the country it means waiting and going through unneeded physical exams so you can see your baby or what have you. A female making the tough decision of seeking to abort whats in their womb will go through all that to get their abortion. But if abortion control activists had their way, there would be no legal abortions in clean safe clinics. A woman would have to visit someone like Gosnell where even the female's life in question would be at risk.

That's the difference between gun control and abortion control. In the first instance, you have to wait to get a gun and maybe you can or can't buy one of those 30-50 round magazines. For the latter, it means a woman going into a back alley clinic with someone who may or may not be a licensed medical professional.

Congrats on your kid graduating. Soon he'll be asking for the keys to the car.
