Racism and militarism

Friday, Aug. 15, the Peoples NonViolent Response Coalition presents internationally renowned human and civil rights leader Damu Smith for a discussion of the need for people of color to join the fight against militarism. Smith, cochair of Black Voices for Peace and director of the National Black Environmental Justice Network, has also served with the American Friends Service Committee and Greenpeace USA. 7–9 p.m., Allen Temple Baptist Church, 8501 International, Oakl. ‘Retooling Dissent’ documentary

Monday, Aug. 18, attend a screening of the documentary Retooling Dissent as part of the "Collective Pranks, Protest Graphics, and Space Reclamation" West Coast tour. The film features media produced by the Chicago activist community, including the Institute for Applied Autonomy, the Bikewrites, StreetRec, and others responsible for much of the protest and creative street theater during the World Economic Forum. 6:30 p.m., AK Press, 674A 23rd St., Oakl.
